The device is known as the Mi Water Purifier, and it is used to convert tap water into consumable drinking water.
The Mi Water Purifier uses the Reverse Osmosis (RO) process, and “is super compact, shows real-time water quality, and reminds you on your smartphone when it’s time to replace the filter” according to Xiaomi.
