Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi announced the Redmi 2A handset in March and now people can acquire it in China. While the Xiaomi Redmi 2 comes with a price tag of $115 (713 yuan in the local market), the company has priced the Redmi 2A more economically at only $80 (499 yuan), thereby making the device the cheapest Xiaomi handset in the market.
The Xiaomi Redmi 2A features many of the same specs as its lesser-enhanced sibling, but with a couple of key improvements: More RAM and more storage capacity. Like the Redmi 2, the 2A features a 4.7-inch 720p display, 2200mAh battery, 8MP rear camera and 2MP front camera along with dual-SIM support and 4G LTE.
Unlike the Redmi 2, however, it has 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, double the memory and storage of the original version. Inside the Redmi 2A, there’s a quad-core 1.5GHz chip made by Leadcore, which Xiaomi uses to run a skinned version of Android 5.0 Lollipop.
The quad-core processor has the capacity to deliver a clocking speed of 1.5 GHz. In addition, the Leadcore L1860 chipset comes with Mali-T68 MP2 graphics and is supported by 1 GB of RAM. The Redmi 2A has 8 GB of internal storage, which can be increased via a 32 GB microSD card.
In terms of the camera division, Redmi 2A comes with an 8 megapixel primary shooter on the rear side, in addition to a 2 MP selfie front-facing camera. The Xiaomi Redmi 2A features many of the same specs as its lesser-enhanced sibling, but with a couple of key improvements: More RAM and more storage capacity. The Redmi 2A comes pre-installed with Android 5.0 Lollipop that is superimposed with Xiaomi's proprietary MIUI 6 software. The Xiaomi Redmi 2A offers dual-SIM facility, as the device is mainly aimed at the Chinese markets, it will be usable on the 2G, 3G as well as 4G networks of China Mobile. On the other hand, subscribers of China Unicom will only be able to use 2G connectivity. However, the latest Xiaomi handset also supports Wi-Fi and 4.0 Bluetooth.
While Xiaomi is yet to confirm if the Redmi 2A will be sold outside China, it is interesting to note that the Chinese tech firm is endeavoring to expand into international markets. Live Mint states that Xiaomi has already started mi.com stores in the United States, France, Britain and Germany.
Like all Xiaomi products, it’s incredibly affordable. At just 499 Yuan (around $80), it’s the same price the original Redmi 2 launched at when it first hit the market. Also, like all Xiaomi products, getting hold of one this side of the Chinese border will be difficult. It’ll launch in China later this week, but no plans to launch internationally have yet been announced, at least not officially.
If you really want to check it out, be sure to keep an eye out on sites like eBay, they typically make their way to the popular marketplace eventually, albeit at a slight premium.
